Open Word Classes

Open Word Classes, These are four types

  1. Noun
  2. verb
  3. Adjective
  4. Adverb

1.Noun

Nouns are words that name people, places, things or ideas. It can do lots of things in sentences. they are probably the most over worked of all eight of the parts of speech. Nouns have the ability to perform different functions or jobs in sentences.

Ex. My brother likes Chocolate
The car is mine

2.Verb

A verb is a word that expressed an action or a state of being. There are two main categories of of verbs

  • Main verb
    • Ex. I cut fish
    • My friend cleaned the room
  • Helping verb
    • I am a student
    • I have a sister

3. Adjectives

Adjectives describe nouns and pronouns. Adjective answer at least one of these question

  • Which one?(yellow, the, that)
  • What kind? (furry,plastic, special)
  • How many? (sixteen, several, many)
  • Whose? (Children’s, his, It’s, John’s)

Example

  1. My seat is more comfortable
  2. The water is hottest
  3. The program was most organized

4. Adverb

Adverbs modify or describe verbs, adjectives or another adverb

Example

  1. The challenge was accepted nicely
  2. He Played very well
  3. The Idea was so obvious
